Tales from the River – Traveling, Oct 14, 2011

Oh, my gosh! We were up over 24 hours getting from Budapest to DFW! Yes, we both took minor naps on the plane but, believe me, they weren’t long enough! And there are NO pictures taken today. You wouldn’t have … Continue reading

Beautiful Music

Chloë Agnew.  Lisa Kelly.  Lisa Lambe.  Máiréad Nesbitt.  Not household names, by any stretch of the imagination.  Yet they have the most combination of beautiful voices, talents, looks, and personalities I have seen in quite a long time.  Ed, Kim and I saw them last night at the Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie.

Celtic Woman began as a single show in Dublin in 2004 and was very well-received.  Since then, they have traveled the world together, becoming sisters in the love of music and performing.  It definitely shows onstage.  Their voices meld together beautifully.  Their movements seem to naturally complement each other, sometimes scripted, sometimes not.

I love them all but I think my favorite is Lisa Kelly.  Not only is her vocal range closest to my own but she was working in a 9 to 5 job in the computer industry before taking some time off to perform in a Christmas show in Dublin.  From there, she was cast as a lead vocalist in Riverdance, finally coming to Celtic Woman in 2004 for the original performance.  She has three children (yes, 3!  How can she still have THAT figure!) and she travels with them.  In fact, she has been on the road since 2005 for about 80% of the time, she says.  Can you see why I am thoroughly intrigued with this woman?  She went from the computer industry to something for which she has a great passion.  What an absolutely joyous way to live your life.

No, this obviously is not country music, pop, jazz, blues, Big Band, or classical, all of which I adore.  Their repertoire consists of old Irish songs, songs composed just for them, and contemporary songs, performed in their very unique style and energy.  This particular show, “Songs from the Heart,” is about the love, hope, joy, and loss that your heart could feel and they definitely put their hearts in every song.  Their rendition of Amazing Grace received a standing ovation from this large Texas audience.  Sometimes you may tear up, sometimes you will clap and stamp your feet, and sometimes you will just sit in wonder, watching them enjoy their craft and the audience’s response to them.

If you have not seen a Celtic Woman live performance, find one and go!

A Busy Week

What a week!  I went back to the dentist to get the old fillings on the left side of my mouth fixed.  I didn’t realize just how much they could deaden everything inside your mouth!  The inside of my cheek, … Continue reading

A Budget for Alien Abduction Investigation?

Ron Paul???  Seriously???  Please!!!  At the CPAC going on right now, Ron Paul won the straw poll for President for the 2nd year in a row.  Are you serious?  I KNOW he’s a Texan but that does not mean that most Texans, even Texas Republicans, would vote for him.  Unless the Dems put up Daffy Duck or Goofy, Ron Paul could not win.  I know I wouldn’t vote for him.  Where do the people who attend CPAC come from?  That does not give me any sense of respect for anyone attending CPAC.  I wouldn’t want to be associated with that straw poll.

In a recent Fox News poll, President Obama would win over the straw poll runner-up, Mitt Romney, 48% to 41%.  I’m not sure what that says about either one of them but so far I wouldn’t vote for any of the front-runners, Republican OR Democrat.  I’m just not sure that any of them have gotten the message yet that they work for us and that their power rests with us and not strictly within the Washington beltway.

I have to live within a budget.  Texas has to live within a budget.  Businesses have to live within a budget.  A budget includes the money you have and the credit you are approved for.  Up until recently, credit has been relatively easy to get.  Nowadays, though, personal and business credit is difficult to get so we are forced to live on the money we have.  We can’t even rely on the assets we own anymore because few can afford and would want to buy what we may need to sell.  Yet the Federal Government doesn’t have this stipulation.

One thing I do know … Even though I am conservative, I will not be looking at the results of the CPAC straw poll to help me decide on a candidate.

Thank you, Ed!

Another Round of Snow

The Snow Continues

No, there’s really nothing new to report.  It’s still in the single-digits at night.  We still have snow.  Now, some of the snow has turned into ice on top of the snow so it’s kind of slippery in some spots. I’d take more pictures but the view hasn’t changed all that much from the other day.

What has changed is that I am now BORED!!!  There are things I could be doing around the house but I don’t want to do them.  I’ve been rooting through old boxes, drawers, closets, and bookshelves, looking for things to donate to Goodwill.  I could continue that activity.  I could rearrange the accessories in the living room, clean off my desk, move the treadmill from one room to another, etc.  The good thing about living in the country is that we don’t have to shovel the snow so that’s not even on the table, but it might be fun, just because it’s something I usually don’t have to do.  Crap, now I’m REALLY bored!

Yesterday I resorted to posting some old pictures, just to have something interesting to do.  Now I’m thinking about going to Snapfish and creating a book.  One page for every age that I can find good pictures of Ed, me, Drake, Kim and Lee, showing what we all looked like at the same age.  That would be fun but, my goodness, where would you start?  There are pictures all over the place and only some of them are digitized.  Not only that, Drake is only 28 but soon he will have a birthday.  Maybe I should wait until he hits thirty and THEN put the book together.  No, that would be like trying to hit a moving target.  Not good enough.  The project would never end.

Hmmm.  I really need to scan some family recipes and put them in a book format.  That would be fun.  I could give family recipe books out to the whole family next Christmas.  All of the recipes are in one place so it would be easy to find them all.  Well, maybe not.  I don’t have my flat scanner set up yet on my laptop.  Do I really want to get into that right now?  Naw, not really.

Hmmm.  I could give the dogs a bath.  That wouldn’t be fun but it really needs to be done.  They are starting to stink with that wet-dog smell.  But what would you expect when their bathroom is outside and there’s snow all over the place?  Not to mention that I would have to towel dry them and THEN blow-dry them, since it’s too cold for them to go wandering around the house wet.  Never mind.  Too much effort.

I could ask Ed to build a fire in the fireplace and then we could just sit and veg out on the couch, with the dogs snoozing in-between us.  Ok, that’s getting closer.  Oh, hell, I think I’ll just take a nap!
